April 12, 2020: Inspiration
I was really struck by this piece in today's New York Times about the young, blind Lieutenant Governor of Washington who decided to join the Jesuit order after realizing that his growing sense of pride, if left unchecked, might become a central force his life, rather than his commitment to excellence and service. His life story and rise to public office is also pretty incredible.
In the first week of our stay-at-home lives, I listened to this podcast about managing uncertainty and found it quite useful. I wonder if it still holds up in this fourth week? (I also really like the name of the podcast: the anxious achiever.)
Since moving to LA, I've listened to Fresh Air pretty frequently. (I know, I'm a late adopter. But I can still think it's awesome.) I love hearing from people who are shaping our culture, politics, and ideas. I think everyone who comes on expects to reveal something to Terry Gross and we all get let in on the secret. I don't listen to every episode but I bet I listen a couple times a week, often when I'm cooking dinner. I've even listened to some conversations more than once! (Here's looking at you, Robert Caro.)
